More Paris

No trip to Paris is complete without a visit to the Louvre. I felt like I should have had a long course in art history before going in though. I was almost more impressed by the building itself. Maybe it was my mood or the fact that I'm much more drawn to 20th century artwork but the visit was not my favorite thing in Paris. Strike that first sentence. I could feel like I had a complete visit to Paris without Le Louvre.

Nonetheless it was semi-enjoyable...

Yes, it was another beautiful spring day in Paris!

Jim, not exactly looking like a native Parisian.

Hotel St. Andre Des Arts

Had to visit. Next time I am in Paris I would love to stay in this vibrant part of town.

Escargots, but of course.

Lunch in Latin Quarter

Found this restaurant, La Palette, in St. Germain de Pres area. Classic Paris with bookshops and tiny art galleries.

More Loire Valley

I just reviewed Jim's blog to try to avoid too much duplication of photos. We have many of the same images as you can imagine.

Laurie had a fall on day 3 but is doing okay after slightly injuring her wrists. But she's a trooper and is back on the bike doing well. Here she is getting ready for a big day 5. This is the courtyard of our home for 2 nights, Chateau de Chissay.

Pre-ride yoga led by a young power yoga instructor from San Diego (who was on the ride with us).

Our first stop was Chateau de Chinonceau. Jim documented a couple of the main women who played a major role in the history of this gorgeous chateau. Lots of intriguing story lines for sure.

As we strolled the gardens, Laurie noticed the poles and she is absolutely certain they must be for the esteemed Kentucky pole bean!!!

Yet another magnificent flower arrangement.

The chateau as viewed from the opposite side of Diane's garden (the powerful mistress).

More flowers! Beautiful weeds deserving of a photo.

Our lunch stop at Chateau de Nitray with a tour of the grounds and a wine tasting. As Jim says this guy was a wonderful character with a veritable twinkle in his eye.

An amusing sign along the roadway.

At the end of the day, I decided to do the long loop and give the legs a serious workout. The only stop was this stunning building, Chateau de Montpoupon, known as one of the most picturesque in all of France. Based on what I've seen this week it's hard to argue.

The clouds provided a suitably dramatic backdrop for this castle.

Our last night of the tour, we had a dressy dinner at our chateau. I had to wear the jacket and tie since I brought them all that way! Here's a cool spontaneous photo of Laurie and me with our superb guides.

Very glad we made the effort to get this photo. As Jim said, these guides were both incredibly energetic and smiling and took care of us extremely well. Their wonderful personalities really added to the flavor of the trip - we felt lucky.

This photo is for Colin. This town is in the movie "Catch Me If You Can" with Leonardo Dicaprio and Tom Hanks (highly recommended by the way). We actually rode through this town and checked out the wonderful farmer's market (which happens every Friday). I somehow lost my photos of this market (dang!!) but Jim has some nice ones). By the way, Colin, I did not see those buildings shown in the movie but it may have been filmed somewhere else. Great little town though, oozing French charm out of every side street.

One of the fascinating things about staying in these chateaus has been how eclectic they are. Every room seems to be different. A couple in our group stayed in this cave room. Wild, wild stuff.

Here is a view of the inside.

We took our high speed and comfortable train ride back to Paris. Yes, over 180 mph! Beats flying if you ask me!

Quick taxi back to our hotel on the Right Bank. Tired. Hungry (for no good reason). Ready for more Paris sightseeing tomorrow. 200+ miles on the bike and we are ready for a lot of walking now.

Off soon to find a good French restaurant. Can't wait.....

A few shots from the past few days:

Kevin and Laurie pose on the left and Betsy and Earl on the right at Candes St. Martin.

Statue of Joan of Arc in Chinon:

Poppies and Barley. Maybe mom can paint this!

At Chateau D'Azay le Rideau:

More poppies!!!

The chapel where Leonardo Da Vinci is buried at Chateaux D'Amboise:

View from Chateaux, one of my favorite stops in France so far. Neat town too. We ate lunch directly below the chapel on that little alley below. Jim and I had salmon ravioli that was to die for!!

View from the chateaux:

Great first day on the bikes. After our hour long TGV train ride from Paris at speeds well over 100 mph, we arrived in Tours. From there we took a bus ride to a winery in Chinon, which is our home for the next two days. After a nice tasting of Rose and Cab Franc, we had a catered lunch with various cheeses and meats and breads.

Then it was time for a safety talk and to start riding! It was quite cool and overcast to start but within several miles we all warmed up just fine. Poppies are in bloom here right now and the crickets and birds are chirping constantly on the narrow back roads, some barely wider than one car. Some beautiful views along the way. We did not stop enough along the route but we will rectify that in the coming days!

The big site along this route was a visit to the castle that supposedly inspired the writing of Sleeping Beauty.

We ended the ride at the Hotel Diderot where we will stay for 2 nights. Chinon is a neat old town where Joan of Arc came as a teenager to convince Charles VII (a future king) to allow her to lead troops into battle. Crazy story.

Last night we had a wonderful 5-course dinner that lasted 3 hours, the norm here in France. Here are some photos taken on our walk to the restaurant.

And lastly I took a photo of a map showing our rides for the first 3 days:

Day 1 in France

A bit groggy first day but we managed to visit the top of l'Arc de Triomphe and have a nice meal along the Champs Elysses. After a slow dinner we strolled toward La Seine and back to Place de la Concorde before hopping on the metro to get back to the hotel.
